NutraSweet, Equal and other artificial sweeteners contain Aspartame. Aspartame is, by far the most dangerous substance on the market that is added to foods. Aspartame accounts for over 75% of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA. These can be very serious reactions including seizures and death. A few of the 90 different documented symptoms listed in an FDA report as being caused by aspartame include: headaches, migraines, dizziness, seizures, nausea, numbness, muscle spasms, weight gain, rashes, depression, fatigue, irritability, tachycardia, insomnia, vision problems, hearing loss, heart palpitations, breathing difficulties, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, loss of taste, tinnitus, vertigo, memory loss and joint pain.
Researchers studying the adverse effects of aspartame state that the following chronic illnesses can be triggered or worsened by ingesting aspartame: autism, brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, mental retardation, lymphoma, birth defects, fibromyalgia and diabetes.
Aspartame is made up of three chemicals: aspartic acid, phenylalanine and methanol.
Aspartic acid (40% of aspartame)
Dr. Russell Blaylock, a professor of neurosurgery at the Medical University of Mississippi, published a book that thoroughly detailed the damage that is caused by the ingesting of excessive aspartic acid from aspartame. He cites 500 scientific references to show how excess free excitatory amino acids such as aspartic acid and glutamic acid (by the way, 99% of monosodium glutamate (MSG) is glutamic acid) in our food supply is causing serious chronic neurological disorders and my read of other acute conditions. Aspartate and glutamate act as neurotransmitters in brain which can result in the influx of too much calcium into cells resulting in cell death. This is why they are referred to as “excitotoxins”. They excite or stimulate neural cells to death.
Dr. Olney, a professor in the department of psychiatry, school of medicine, Washington University, a neuroscientist and researcher found in his research that aspartic acid caused holes in the brains of mice.
Phenylalanine ( 50% of aspartame)
Phenylalanine is an amino acid normally found in the brain. It has been shown that ingesting aspartame, especially along with carbohydrates, can lead to excess levels of phenylalanine in the brain excessive levels in the blood and calls levels of serotonin in the brain to decrease leading to emotional disorders such as depression. Dr. Lewis J Elsas testified before the U.S. Congress that high blood phenylalanine can be concentrated in parts of the brain and it’s especially dangerous for infants and fetuses.
Dr. Russell L Blaylock’s research showed that excessive buildup of phenylalanine in the brain can cause schizophrenia or make one more susceptible to seizures.
Methanol (10% of aspartame)
Methanol is also referred to as wood alcohol and is a deadly poison. The EPA considers methanol a cumulative poison due to the low rate of excretion once it is absorbed. In the body, methanol is oxidized to formaldehyde and formic acid; both of these metabolites are toxic. The FDA recommends limits of conception to 7.8 mg/day. Approximately 1 quart of aspartame sweetened beverage contains about 56 mg of methanol. Heavy users of aspartame containing products consumes as much as 250 mg of methanol daily or 32 times the EPA limit.
Symptoms from methanol poisoning include headaches, tinnitus, dizziness, nausea gastrointestinal disturbances, weakness, vertigo, chills, memory lapses, numbness and shooting pain in the extremities, behavioral disturbances and neuritis. Additional problems can include vision problems, progressive contraction of the visual fields, blurred vision, retinal damage and blindness. Formaldehyde is known as a carcinogen, interferes with DNA replication and causes birth defects.

How about Splenda – isn’t it a natural sugar without calories?
Well, we know that aspartame is bad, but what about Splenda? It’s supposed to be a safe alternative to aspartame, Right?
Splenda is made from sugar and chlorine. The truth is that Splenda is not natural and does not taste like sugar. The sweetness of Splenda derives from a chlorocarbon that contains three atoms of chlorine in every one of its molecules. Chlorine is commonly found in nature, but almost always in combination with other building block elements. Chlorine structure makes it very reactive and because it is so reactive is very useful chemist, engineers and others involved in making things human use every day. The manufacturers as Splenda admits that about 27% of the product is absorbed by the body, but they cannot guarantee us what amount of chlorine stays in the body and what percentage flushes out.
New chemical sweeteners like Splenda, and the sweetener blends(aspartame, sucralose and acesulfame K blended together in one product) may be causing users to show signs of weight gain, disruption of sleep, sexual dysfunction, increasing cancer, MS, lupus, diabetes and a list of epidemic degenerative diseases.
Maybe it’s time you reassess your choices.
